Save the Date! – for an exciting professional development opportunity for educators

David Macauley and David Carroll share more than just a first name. The two men are both authors and illustrators, and they’re both recipients of MacArthur “Genius Grants.” On April 3, they’ll be sharing their stories with students, teachers and others at Bow High School. New Hampshire author and storyteller Rebecca Rule will lead the interviews and discussion.

The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts presents Follow the Passion: A Celebration & Exploration of Arts, Literacy and Creativity in Education, with David Macaulay and David Carroll. The program begins at 9 a.m. on April 3, 2009 at Bow High School and will include a box lunch, opportunities for book purchase and signing, plus a day pass for the Currier Museum of Art's exhibit “Building Books: The Art of David Macaulay.”

Macaulay is a visual storyteller. His architectural series of books includes Cathedral, Pyramid, Mosque,and How Things Work. His most recent publication, The Way We Work, illustrates the remarkable workings of the human body.

Carroll, a naturalist, author, and illustrator, has the eye of an artist, the mind of a scientist, the voice of a storyteller, and the soul of a conservationist. His books include Swampwalker Journal, Self-Portrait with Turtles, Trout Reflections, and The Year of the Turtle. In the spring of 2009, a new book, Following the Water, a Hydromancer's Notebook, will be published. 

The event, which is open to the public, is designed especially for teachers, children’s librarians, teaching artists, parents, and middle- through high-school students. 

Follow the Passion is a partnership event of the N.H. State Council on the Arts with Bow High School, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire. Pre-registration is required. Another Date to Save: Friday, June 19, 2009 is NECAP’s Widening the Circle Conference
Plugging In: Connecting Teaching Artists with New Media and Technology, is the topic for this year’s annual Widening the Circle Conference for Teaching Artists, sponsored by the New England Consortium of Artist-Educator Professionals.  The event will be held at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

With calls for a new version of the Depression-era Works Progress Administration to put artists to work creating public artworks, this is a good time to look back on the original program.
